Farming in Greece

Nicos Lioliopoulos  from Greese mailed me this pictures and wrote:

My village can be shown in the background of picture 4 and 5. It is siutated on the small mountain behinde. We are on the beginning of the great Aliakmonas river valley. In this valley, are 50% of fields (circa 3,500 ha) peach trees as you can see in the picture  4 and 5 with the pipe rainer. In the other fields are growing 150 ha beets  700 ha cotton 500 ha wheat  tobaco, corn, okra, industrial tomato and some vegeterians or other types of trees.

We have no industry in my area and the people works here in fields or in services. The majority of population are poor and have very little fields.

The only industry in my village is the cooperative of Meliki AS.  That packs conservs and exports fruids and vegetables. The unit belogs to ure

Something about irregation here. In greece there is no rain during the summer and the heat is hard. We irregate beets and corn 6-7 times a year and cotton 3-4. For the 50% of  valey there is a central irregating network that give us water pumbed from the near river Aliakmonas. For the other fields wie pumb water from the ground with tractor or using electricity. Some farmer have no drums and carrying the pipes by hand!
